Against the Social Integration Programme by the Ministry of Justice of ROK

On April 14, 2008, about 90 Korean NGOs working for migrants' human rights held a press conference advocating overall revision of the Social Integration Programme to be implemented by the Ministry of Justice of ROK. ARENA also joined the conference as one member of Network of Marriage Migrant Groups in Korea. In the public statement, we demanded that 1) the Ministry of Justice do an overall revision of the mandatory Social Integration Programme which is being instituted as one of the preconditions for marriage migrants to acquire nationality, and 2) an alternative programme should replace the Social Integration Programme in order to give support with gender-sensitive and multi-cultural principles. |

2007 Regional School on Marriage Migration in Asia: A Platform for Research and Action
ARENA organized the 2007 Regional School on Marriage Migration in Asia: A Platform for Research and Action, which took place from November 10-13, 2007 in Pagsanjan, the Philippines. The event was presented in collaboration with the Korea Migrant Women Human Rights Center, Isis International-Manila, and Kanlungan Center Foundation Inc. At the regional school, about 35 NGO activists, concerned researchers, and marriage migrants from 6 different countries, such as the Philippines, Korea, Mongolia, Vietnam, Japan, Taiwan participated in and shared their thoughts on the current situation of each country. In addition, they explored diverse issues like diaspora, human (in)security, and citizenship related to marriage migration.

Regional School on Democracy and Democratization in Asia
Jointly Organized by SungKongHoe University and ARENA
A regional school on Democracy and Democratization in Asia has been organized within the framework of the MA course in Inter-Asia NGO Studies (MAINS), SungKongHoe University, Seoul. The course looks into the dynamics of societal changes and examines how people’s learning has been influencing the processes of democratization and social change. Practical learning from people’s participation in democratization processes and movements and resistance against hostile forces based on participants' experience is another important dimension of the course. Learning from the grassroots development organizations is another major feature of the course.
