The Journey Begins
It was a hot and hummid autumn afternoon in dhaka in july 1983. I was having a chat at Nijera Kori office with Khushi Kabir, The program coodinator. Then came a request from her as a pleasant suprise.

Would you mind attending a meeting in Thailand?

"What's up", I said.

"They say it's a network of intellectuals and activists. I have been invited, but I can't go. So why don't you represent us"?

I said, "Yes, with pleasure"

That was the beginning.

Regional summer school
The main event of July was the summer school. In ARENA vocabulary, it is termed as ‘regional school’, while some colleagues in our faculty meeting were eager to know why it is called ‘regional’ and why not ‘summer’. So I had been shuttling between the two terms ‘regional’ and ‘summer’ for few weeks and then decided on my own to use it as ‘regional summer school’.

Faculty meeting

An extended faculty meeting of MAINS was held on 3 May where we discussed programs for summer and autumn quarters. A work plan for a “regional school” in the summer quarter on Democracy and Democratization in Asia was also discussed. I also presented a draft of a five-year proposal for MAINS for discussion. These are to be finalized by ARENA.

Spring sets in

Spring has set in. I see white cherry and off-white magnolia in the campus and pink jindaley blooming in the hills at the backyard of the Sungkonghoe University (SKHU). Pine trees that lost their lifeblood in the cold winter have started greening.
