Hongkong NGO organised Exchange Forum on WTO impact on Asian Peasants |

The 'Hong Kong People's Alliance on WTO'(link) has organised a series of workshops, sharing and education booths as the preparation for the WTO Sixth Ministerial Conference in Hong Kong. Their latest activity will be a exchange forum on 'The Voice of Asian Peasants', aiming to share how the policy of WTO has affected peasants around Asia.
According to a public survey initiated by Oxfam Hong Kong and conducted by the Public Opinion Program of Hong Kong University (link), 91.8% of the Hong Kong people do not know the agenda of the WTO 6th Ministerial Conference.
This survey has reflected Hong Kong Government's 'efforts' in promoting the WTO 6MC.
On the other hand, the Hong Kong People Alliance on WTO which is an alliance of Hong Kong NGOs and often being projected as 'troublemaker' both by the government and mainstream media, has been focusing on public education on the impacts of WTO on magrinalised group in the society. Starting from September, they has organised a series of public educational events including public forum, workshops, exhibition in universities.
Their latest event is a public exchange forum and has invited peasants from around Asia to share with Hong Kong people the impact on their daily life as peasant.
Content of the Exchange Forum ‘The Voice of Asian Peasants’:
1) How WTO kill farmers? - Introduction of Agreement on Agriculture (AoA) and its Impacts; 2) Presentation of Peasants from: Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan, Thailand & Korean; 3) China Accession to WTO and the impacts on Peasants & Rural Development; 4) Cases of Peasants Struggle and the Alternatives.
