Director of the Women’s Education and Research Centre in Colombo Sri Lanka, she is a long time peace activist writing and researching on issues pertaining to women in the conflict zones of Sri Lanka. Currently, Selvy is also Editor of Nivedini, a Sri Lankan Journal on Gender Studies, a Visiting Lecturer of the Eastern University in Sri Lanka and Member of the Editorial Board of the forthcoming journal of South Asian Feminist Research Forum

In 1988, she was commissioned by the Leiden University, The Netherlands to conduct research for its ‘Women and Development’ Course. The findings were then published in an article entitled Dutch Bilateral Co-operation Towards Women’s Development – The Study Programme at the Leiden University for Indonesian women. Prior to this research project, the Virje University in The Netherlands also commissioned Selvy to research on its project Education for Black South African Students.

Apart from these studies, Selvy has conducted research on poverty alleviation, rehabilitation of women and children living in refugee camps, women and political thought, women, culture and sexuality, liberal reforms, feminist consciousness, feminine speech and writing. Among her more recent published works are Ideology, Caste, Class & Gender and The Spectrum of Femininity: A Process of Deconstruction.

Selvy was recently commissioned as Gender Specialist/Consultant for the World Bank funded project on ‘The Gender Dimensions in the Post Conflict Needs Assessment for Housing’ (February – April 2003) and Gender Consultant to the UNDP/CIDA project on ‘Needs Assessment Sub-Committee for Peace Process on Immediate Humanitarian and Rehabilitation Needs in the North and East’ (March – June 2003
