Head of Department of Literature, Faculty of Humanities of the University of Indonesia (UI), Melani has been working with women groups in Indonesia since the political upheaval in 1998. She specializes in postcolonial studies, comparative literature, gender and cultural studies.
Melani is in the Advisory Board of the ‘Voice of Concerned Mothers’ (Suara Ibu Peduli) and the Asian Scholarship Foundation in Thailand, a member of the Editorial Boards of both the Inter-Asia Cultural Studies Journal and the Lontar Publication in Jakarta and a member of the Board of the Southeast Asian Literacy Council (Malaysia – Indonesia – Brunei).
She has completed a number of researches in post-colonial theory, gender and cultural studies published in Indonesian as well as in international scholarly journals and engages closely with Indonesian women’s groups. She received her PhD in English Language and Literature from Cornell University in 1992.
Melani was a member of the ARENA Executive Board 2000 – 2003.
