A recognized authority on the history of the Philippine communist movement and a leading theoretician of the left, Dodong was elected as President of the University of the Philippines in 1999. He has published three books and several articles on politics and education and was Visiting Professor at the International Christian University in Tokyo and a Senior Research Fellow at the Australian National University in Canberra from 1982 – 85.
Detained for subversion under the Martial Law, upon release from prison, he was immediately elected as the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in Diliman, the largest academic unit in the UP system, at that time.
Dodong is founder of the Third World Studies Center, a center housed by the University of the Philippines that devotes itself to understanding, bringing in and disseminating new and alternative perspectives on the Philippine, regional and international conditions.
