Agnes hails from Singapore, though in the past couple of years, she was based
in Manchester, United Kingdom as a PhD. Candidate. Agnes has also recently
published a book on Oral History of Women in Anti-Colonial and Independence
Struggles in Malaysia and Singapore (1949 - 1989). Her book comprises of 16
life stories of women guerrillas from Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore, who are
currently residing in Southern Thailand. The book is published in both English
and Chinese languages. A Taiwanese and a Malay language version will also be
published soon. Its UK edition will also be published soon. The Chinese version
of her book was listed by the Asia Week (Chinese) as one of the top ten best
sellers in Malaysia for the month of July in 2004. The book is also available
in Singapore, as well as by major internet bookstores such as www.amazon.com .
She brings into ARENA, the wealth of knowledge and experience acquired through
many years of intellectual engagement as a Sociologist and an Activist. Her
involvement extends into a wide variety of issues, including Gender and Women's
concerns, Labour and Environment. Agnes has written quite a number of articles
on these different issues, based on her own work and involvement, some of which
are also available on the Internet.
Prior to joining ARENA, Agnes has lived in and worked with many international
and regional organizations and networks, namely in Singapore, Hong Kong,
Taiwan, Korea, Thailand, the Netherlands, Germany and the United Kingdom. Since
1996, Agnes has made Hong Kong her base. However, she has also focused her
attention and energy in campaigning for issues that relate to the larger
context of East Asia; particularly in Taiwan, Korea and Hong Kong.
Agnes has joined ARENA since 5th July 2005. She is joined now by a capable and dedicated team of new and old staff since the 1st August 2005.Together they will lead ARENA into a new and exciting stage of her development, including the probable RELOCATION of its administration and management to Seoul, Korea by early 2006.
