Karou finished her PhD from the Department of Sociology of the University of Essex, UK, Kaoru is a member of the VAWW-Net Japan (Violence Against Women in Wars Network Japan) and the AJWRC (Asia Japan Women¡¯s Resource Centre). Prior to enrolling in the University of Essex, Kaoru was Coordinator of the PPSG from 1996 ~ 2001.

Kaoru¡¯s area of interest range from gender and sexuality, sex work, commercialization of intimacy, international migration, social marginalisation, citizenship, intimate sphere, social theory, research methodology, and quite apart from her academic experience, the peace movent. In April 2003, she concluded a year¡¯s fieldwork on Thai female sex workers¡¯ experience with Japanese customers in Japan and their re-integration process in Chiangrai Thailand.

Among Kaosru¡¯s more recent publications in English and Japanese are: a book review on Sharon Chalmers, Emerging Lesbian Voices from Japan, in Sexualities (Journal), a Japanese publication translated as An Invitation to ¡®Intimate Citizenship¡¯ ? Accumulating Dialogues: A Process, or an Exercise to create a Social Space for Recognizing Differences and a book review on Jackson, Peter A and Cook, Nerida M. (eds) Genders and Sexualities in Modern Thailand, in Sexualities (Journal).
