An Associate Professor of Asian Studies at the University of the Philippines, Ed has a Ph.D. in Southeast Asian Studies from the National University of Singapore. He teaches courses on the peasantry and rural development in Asia, social and economic development in Southeast Asia, and development theories and perspectives. He was ARENA Coordinator from June 1993 a¢æ¡° June 1997.

Ed served as chairperson/board member of various non-governmental organizations engaged in social development and research work and has been on the editorial boards of academic and non-academic journals and periodicals as chairperson, contributing editor, or member.

Since 1976, Ed has conducted numerous social science research studies as project director, coordinator, principal investigator, or team member for Philippine and international academic agencies (including the United Nations University). Research subjects included agrarian reform and rural development, industry studies, regional development, rural unrest and social movements, the political economy of foreign aid, Philippine a¢æ¡° Japan relations, conflicts over natural resources, international labour migration, foreign investments and current political events. Ed has participated in numerous international conferences in various Asian, European, North and Latin American countries as organizer, paper presenter, discussant or convenor.

Ed was a member of the ARENA Executive Board 1994 - 1997.
